5 Ways to Defuse Conflict in Workplace Communication

Rosemary Ravinal, communications consultant and executive speaker coach
in conversation with Cindy Montgenie, managing partner at Edgy Strategies

Most of us think that disagreement is bad and choose to avoid it. Disagreement, when managed well, gets greater results than avoidance does. It can spur better ideas, creativity, and innovation. But success depends on how well prepared you are to navigate conflicts and diverse viewpoints.

Dealing with polarized communication in organizations is crucial for maintaining a healthy, productive work environment. This online workshop will amplify understanding of five steps business leaders can take to defuse and manage divisive communication and come out better on the other side. The steps can also guide consultants and solopreneurs in their interactions with clients, peers and subcontractors.

  1. Learn to listen – principles of adaptive listening
  2. Adopt the vocabulary of non-violent communication
  3. Exercise empathy and suspend judgment
  4. Learn to give and receive feedback
  5. Focus on shared values and collective goals (the win-win)
  6. Bonus tip: Check your ego at the door. It is better to be happy than right.
The conversation will also explore how language and cultural differences shape the context of conflict in communication and how to maneuver through the minefield of political discourse.

A summary PDF download will be provided to all participants.
